Many people feel they safe on the road as long as they drive safely. Sadly, this is not always the case. The problem is careful drivers share the road with some motorists who operate their vehicles negligently, carelessly or recklessly. These drivers can cause serious motor vehicle accidents that may seriously harm or even kill innocent people on the road.
According to Fox 4 News, a 79-year-old woman was killed after the Toyota Camry she was driving was struck by an allegedly stolen Cadillac Eldorado in the 3800 block of Haskell Avenue around 4 p.m. on Aug. 16.
According to the news report, shortly before the collision occurred, when police tried to stop the 28-year-old male driver of the Eldorado in the 1800 block of Central Avenue, the driver sped away. The Eldorado was reported to have slammed into the Camry moments later, the driver was ejected from her car, and sent to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead a few hours later. The Eldorado driver reportedly fled the scene and was later arrested. Reports indicate that he was taken to the hospital with injuries that appeared to be minor and now faces involuntary manslaughter charges.
Reckless and careless drivers don’t only put themselves in danger when they choose to ignore traffic regulations. They also can put other people on the road at risk.
When a vehicle collides with another vehicle, at least one of the parties involved in the car accident may have failed to exercise their duty of reasonable care while behind the wheel. In motor vehicle accidents, liability is often determined based on the theory of negligence. If the driver who caused the crash did not exercise reasonable care while driving, that driver may be held liable for the crash. Injured individuals or the family members of those killed in the crash may then pursue a personal injury or wrongful death claim against the negligent driver.
In some circumstances proving that a driver caused or contributed to a crash can be challenging because that driver may contend that his or her driving behavior was legal and safe. An experienced KC auto accident attorney can guide crash victims or their families throughout the litigation process and help them obtain proper compensation for their injuries or losses.
