The insurance company’s 10th annual Best Drivers Report examined accident claims of insured drivers in 200 of the largest cities throughout the U.S. between 2011 and 2012. In this year’s Best Drivers Report, the factors of population, population density, and precipitation were taken into consideration. In order to identify the cities with the safest drivers, these cities were ranked in terms of their frequency of car collisions with all the factors combined.
Based on the study, drivers in Kansas City, Missouri ranked 12th on the list of safest drivers, up one spot from last year. The top honor this year in terms of the safest driving city in America went to Fort Collins, Colorado. Apart from placing in the top ten every single year, this is the fourth time that the city has ranked 1st in the history of the Best Drivers Report. Exercise Caution
Urban drivers typically deal with numerous obstacles on a daily basis that increase their risk of car accidents, such as heavier traffic, as well as a great number of commercial vehicles, emergency vehicles, pedestrians, intersections and traffic signals. Allstate strongly recommends that drivers exercise caution when behind the wheel to avoid car accidents, particularly in highly populated cities, densely populated cities, and cities with high levels of precipitation.
When possible, drivers should explore alternate routes and avoid traffic jams. It helps to be aware of events occurring in the city that may affect traffic and listening to traffic reports on the radio.
Drivers should also allow for plenty of time to reach their destination and take into account elements such as traffic light stops, gridlock, and pedestrian walkways that may add to their travel time. It is important to stay alert in order to safely slow down or stop for pedestrians, emergency vehicles, and public transportation.
Lastly, drivers should be cautious of road conditions such as rain, ice, snow, and fog. Vehicles should be well maintained for all types of weather conditions, including car functions such as windshield wipers, brakes, headlights, and brake lights.
